Sound

Hey guys!! Welcome back to your favorite blog! Today we're going to be discussing the audio we will add to our film opener. This is now one of the most important parts of our opener sooo... let us get started!

As you may know from my recent blog post, we have switched up our opener! Phi and I did some research and watched other short films/openers for media studies and really liked the ones with a song playing the entire time with little to no dialogue. We started to brainstorm and look through our Spotify playlists and found THE song. When I saw this song in my playlist we immediately chose it and stopped searching because it matches our film theme PERFECTLYYY! We decided on Ribs by Lorde. This song captures the bittersweet feeling of growing up and losing the simplicity of being a youngling😓. Lyrics like "You're the only friend I need" go very well with our opener. If you know our plot you'll understand (iykyk😉)!

Our main issue with Ribs was its length considering it is 4 minutes and 18 seconds and we are supposed to fit it in a two-minute opener... Since I was in charge of editing the audio for the sound story project, Phi and I knew I was going to edit this audio as well (we both know I'm the pro and know a lot of tips and tricks around sound)! I have been using the same program (CapCut) I edited the sound story on to cut bits of the song. For example, the first 40 seconds are just building up to the lyrics so I removed most of that. I also cut a large chunk of the first lyrics to focus on the lyrics that I think would go best with the actual video. Additionally, since the opener begins with the volume turning up to play the song, I had to make sure it matched that, so I used the "Fade In" feature on CapCut to ease my way into the music. The first few shots of our opener are the girls singing Ribs in the car, but after that, they switch and do different activities such as going to the gas station or bowling, where this song would not be playing. So I guess I could classify those car scenes as diegetic as the characters being shown CAN hear the song but as the video progresses, the music continues, becoming non-diegetic since it is no longer audible to the girls.
