Preparing to Film

Hello!! Today, I'll discuss what Phi and I have been planning and thinking for our film now that we are finally going to start filming!! There have been some issues we've run into while trying to start, so let's get into it!

Actors

Finding suitable actors for the roles has honestly been one of our main challenges. Initially, we thought our former members would fill two of the four actress roles, but when they left, Phi and I faced our first dilemma. We then considered asking two of our friends to play the other characters. Everything seemed to be on track until Mia, who was going to play Mandy, told us that she wouldn't be available to film during our planned schedule. On the brighter side, Natalie is still 100% committed to her role, and we PRAYY it stays that way! Phi and I are on the lookout for another actress who fits the Mandy role. However, it's confirmed that I, Mariana, will play Lucia, Phi will play Chloe, and Natalie will take on the role of Amber!

Costumes

I think Phi and I could say this is one of the easier mise-en-scene elements that we have had to prepare for. Each actress will be in charge of bringing their own clothes for filming days, but there is a dress code!! Each character has her own style, so we will all have to dress accordingly. Lucia has a very casual look, Mandy has a trendy style, Amber wears sporty clothes, and Chloe goes for more of an artsy vibe. Either way, if one of the outfits doesn't look right, we can just change it quickly since we're filming in my house! Additionally, we will all need to have some sort of 'childish' outfit change for the match cuts that will be incorporated. All actresses will have to put their hair up in a ponytail or braid with a bow to add to the young girl's flashback scenes.

Props

While this is a very important element of our opener, planning it out hasn't been too difficult! Some props we need to include in the room are pictures of the four of us, stuffed animals, bracelet kits, and fairy lights with even more pictures. Most of these items are things I already own (except for the pictures we need to get printed) or can borrow from the other actresses. We need to make sure the props are organized to feel natural and evoke a sense of nostalgia. Arranging my room to portray Lucia's childhood bedroom shouldn’t take long since we just need to set up the items and possibly remove some of the decor I currently have. I will likely be responsible for getting any missing props, but we will all work together to set everything up.

Locations

My room will be the main location for filming, so we don't have to worry about finding a variety of places. The decorated room already has all the nostalgia we need. However, since we're only shooting in my room (one small space), it may be difficult to adjust the lighting and camera angles to keep things visually interesting and dynamic. I'll also have to make sure my family doesn't interrupt us, and HOPEFULLY, no one is getting their lawn mowed that day😟...

Dates and Times

This has DEFINITELY been one of our main problems in this project, especially considering it's the reason my group went from four to two members... Coordinating everyone's availability may be tough but we must stay on track to avoid filming too late, being rushed, and submitting a mediocre opener. Phi has been stressing out recently since we haven't started filming (I think we're still fine though) because I've been out of the country. However, we've all agreed to film the weekend we get back from break (January 11-12) and HOPE to be done filming by then. If not, we have planned our schedule to give us enough time to set up and reshoot if necessary. Phi and I have also made plans to meet after school at my house to plan and edit.

Film Equipment

Luckily, Phi's cousin James is pulling through with his camera and will be our cameraman. We didn't want to film on our phones because we figured the quality wouldn't be very good, so having a REAL camera will definitely help our opener look more 'professional'. Since James has never taken Media Studies before, he doesn't know about the camera angles and the feelings they can evoke, so Phi and I will need to help him and maybe give him some examples of how to film us. Phi's man Jason also has some lighting equipment and a tripod that we will be using as well. We'll need to figure out how to record audio clearly, especially if there's any background noise.
